Plans are being drawn up to bring back all sports events which are played for Kandy Mayor’s trophy. Some of the keen sports following members and staff are go going all out to launch ‘Sport Unites’, an innovative new programme that uses the power of sport to boost social integration, increase participation and improve the physical and mental health of sportsmen and women. They believe sport is a powerful tool for social change, and can be used to address a range of issues facing communities. It can support the development of essential life skills, develop confidence and improve self-esteem. It’s a great way to strengthen social integration, helping sports lovers from all backgrounds to build relationships.
..The Kandy Municipal Council is blessed with 24 playgrounds and also has 45 community centres across the city. The Mayor Kesara Senanayake said: “I am passionate about grassroots sport and we must harness its unique power to bring people together. Sport can help strengthen societies and has a long history of tackling discrimination and promoting equality, respect and justice.
The sports activities they hoping to have are Six a side football, seven side rugger,six a side cricket, seven a side hockey, Basketball, Tabe Tennis, Netball, Athletics,Carrom and also are hoping to bring backVolleyball . All the winning teams will be presented “Mayors” trophy and also there will be awards for the best teams and players. So, it’s a great idea to bring back sports and help the up and coming sportsmen and women. In the early days Mayors cup sports events were the most looked forward and well participated over here in Kandy
CP Rugby Referees Association doing their best
The re-elected president of the Central Province Rugby Referees Association Mohamed Faizal who learnt his rugby at Vidyartha College and polished at Kandy Sports Club with rest of the committee are hoping to give their best for the coming inter school rugby tournament.The Central Province Rugby Football Union(CPRFU) is the governing body for rugby union in Central Province, which was established in 1992 and conducts in accordance with the SLRFU guidelines and constitution. The committee has some top referees and are sure to give ther best for the game. It’s a good idea and all rugby promoters should give a hand to bring up their standards and they also have one of the senior men in the committee that is Anil Jayasinghe who has been giving a big hand for referees
