Justice Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe stated in Parliament yesterday (19) that the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has full control over the discipline of judges. Therefore, the Minister said that the questions addressed to him by the MPs regarding the handling of a suspect who has been presented to an Additional Magistrate in Colombo will be forwarded to the Judicial Service Commission and the necessary answers will be forwarded when received. Dr. Rajapakshe said that the Chief Justice is acting as the Chairman of the Judicial Service Commission and this matter will be brought to his attention.
The minister said that he cannot interfere in the activities of the judges. The Minister of Justice stated so when several MPs inquired about the alleged incident in which a suspect was treated seemingly favourably by a judge.
“The Judicial Service Commission has complete control over the discipline of judges. The Honourable Chief Justice is the chairman of the Commission. If you give me the questions of the councillors today, I will send them to the Commission and then give the necessary answers,” Dr. Rajapaksa said.
