Woman succumbs in drug raid on Monday night

Borella Police arrested two Sri Lanka Army personnel after a weapon misfired killing a young woman during a drug raid in the Halgahakumbura area Dematagoda on Monday night. 

The official weapon of one of the two personnel said to be Army Intelligence officers had misfired when they were handling a suspect who was taken into their custody over drug trafficking charges.

The 25-year-old woman who was shot is a resident of the same area and was pronounced dead after being admitted to the National Hospital. Those arrested were produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court by the Borella police yesterday and they were remanded till February 21.

Borella Police are conducting further investigations into the incident under the supervision of the Colombo South Division SSP.

Police Media Spokesman, Attorney SSP Nihal Thalduwa speaking to the press yesterday said he was not aware whether the army personnel had informed the police about this raid before it was conducted.

He also said that he was also not aware whether the suspected drug trafficker who was taken into the custody of the two army soldiers in question before the shooting taking place, was arrested or not after the incident.
