Nuwara-Eliya Police Chief Inspector Premalal Hettiarachchi said that a father who forcibly took away the body of his child from the Nuwara-Eliya Hospital was arrested after an operation launched by the Nuwara-Eliya Police. the child was brought unconscious to the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital due to an illness on Saturday (27) afternoon.The child from Beruwala was engaged in a journey in Nuwara Eliya by that time.
Without admitting that the child was dead, the father took away the body. However, police found and the last rites of the dead child had been carried out. When the doctors told the father that the child had died, the child’s father did not accept it and took the child back in the same vehicle he came from.
According to a complaint made to the Nuwara-Eliya Police by the doctors, the Nuwara-Eliya General Hospital checked the security camera system, identified the number of the vehicle and arrested the child’s father and family members who were involved in the incident to the Nuwara-Eliya Police with the support of Beruwala Police.
The family submitted the child’s death certificate and the child’s medical reports and stated that the child had faced several such situations before and there were times when the child was able to breathe again. He said that he had taken the child to a private hospital where he had been receiving treatment. There, the doctors confirmed that the child had died.
It was revealed that the body of the child was removed from the hospital in a proper manner and the last rites were carried out properly. Nuwara Eliya OIC, CI Premalal Hettiarachchi stated that although the child was taken to Nuwara Eliya Hospital, no admission had been recorded. The Chief Inspector of Police further said that no legal action could be initiated against the father.
