The promising athletes Tharushi Karunaratne and Shehan Dilranga of Walala A. Ratnayake Central were adjudged best girls and boys athletes at the Wattegama Zonal Sports Meet concluded at Central Provincial Council grounds Digana last week.
Tharushi Karunaratne who recently won 400m silver and 800 m gold at Asian Junior championship in South Korea once again excelled at this meet to finish 400m in 56.2 seconds while Shehan Dilranga finished first in 800 m cloaking 1 minute and 59.9 seconds to win the top awards.
Over 3000 athletes from Central Provincial Education Zonal area took part at this meet which was conducted by Education Zonal Department of Central Province and it was highly successful said Assistant Sports Director of Wattegama Zonal area Susantha Fernando who is a renowned athletic coach.
Walala A. Ratnayake Central was outstanding at this meet winning titles of age groups. The champions of under 18 girls, under 18 boys, under 20 boys and girls, under 16 boys and girls won by Walala A. Ratnayake Central while they were overall girls champions with 613 points and Wattegama Balika won girls overall second place with 105 points and third place won by Rajawella Hindu College with 58 points.
In addition Walala A. Ratnayake Central won boys overall championship with 324 points while Bandaranayake International school and Pathadumbara MV won second and third place with 78 and 77 points respectively.
Central Province Governor’s Secretary Manjula Madahapola was the chief Guest at this meet while Athula Jayawardena Assistant Director of Sports Central Province Education Department and, Zonal Education Director Tharanga Gunaratne graced this occasion.
