Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka played a pioneering role in ushering peace by ending a 30 year war and if he is appointed as a Member of Parliament as reward for his dedicated service to the motherland it will be highly appreciated, Most Ven. Galagama Sri Aththdasi Mahanayaka Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter said.

The Mahanayake Thera said Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka gave the Armed Forces a correct leadership and directions with a high sense of discipline to liberate the country of terrorism.“Thereby, he had proved his ability to carry out any responsibility entrusted to him with true dedication and efficiency. Although he was temporarily sidelined after the war victory, he was able to take the limelight once again by setting up a new political party to render a helpful service to the country,” the Mahanayake Thera said.

“If he is entrusted with higher responsibilities after being appointed as a Member of Parliament, he would undoubtedly fulfill those responsibilities with excellence,” he said.

The Democratic Party (DP) led by Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka will join the United National Front (UNF) today by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva said discussions on this agreement has been finalised, adding that further discussions are on between UNP General Secretary Kabir Hashim and other party officials with regard to the future course of action.

When asked about the Parliamentary seat that fell vacant following the demise of former Minister M.K.A.D.S. Gunawardena, the deputy minister said Party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and UNP General Secretary Hashim would take a final decision as to who would be appointed to Parliament from the National List.

He was addressing a press conference at the Sirikotha UNP Headquarters yesterday.

Responding to a question by a journalist at the same press conference, Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure Minister Harin Fernando opined that it is good to have a personage with sound knowledge on national security in the Cabinet.

“Considering the current developments in the country, a person who can support us in the activities in the security forces and national security is a timely need. With the arrival of Field Marshall Fonseka, there will be a balance and it will be a strength to the Government.

If a person with vast knowledge on national security is involved in politics, and if he is with us in the Yahapalana Government, why not seek his active contribution?” he asked.

Asked about the statement by Azad Sally of the National United Front that the vacant national list slot should be given to him, Deputy Minister de Silva refused to comment on it stating he was not ready to reply to all what he had said.
