Kingswood beat Zahira 18-5

Kingswood College win over Zahira College by 18 points (One goal, One try and 2 penalties) to 5 (One try) in their inter school rugby 'Cup' competition second round match at the Bogambara stadium yesterday. At half time the score-board read 5 all.

It was in the second half Kingswoodians played with determination and indulged in a superb team effort but had to fight hard for the win. The first half saw a tough battle with both teams trying to overcome each other.

It was the winners' superior speed and better handling of the wet ball in the back division that brought Kingswoodians the victory. The winning team’s forwards played hard and had the better of the exchanges in the loose. They played with a good teamwork despite their week back division. The halves tried to open the game but the ‘threes’ lacked thrust to have a upper hand. Their tacking too was poor.

The Zahirians who did well in the first half seemed good in the beginning. But in the second half the forwards did not combine well but were superior in ball handling and reading of the game in contrast to their opponents. Their backs were well fed and were fast and were sound in attack as well as in defence but the muddy condition and wet ball prevented them from scoring. For Kingwood, R.B. Ekanayake scored one try, H.M. Sampath scored the other try and converted a try and the two penalties. For Zahira the try was scored by M. Deen. Referee Ajith Kumara
