Rajitha sends letter of demand to GMOA

Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne has sent a letter of demand to the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA), a Health Ministry spokesman said.

According to the spokesman, the letter of demand was sent through a legal firm to the GMOA Secretary demanding Rs. 1 billion within three weeks’ time. Further legal action will be taken if the GMOA fails to pay the demanded sum within three weeks.

The letter of demand was sent in connection with the tarnishing of the good name of the Health Minister by presenting inaccurate facts, during a press conference held by the GMOA on June 17.

The inaccurate facts include misrepresentations that the Health Ministry had caused a Rs. 20 billion loss to the government by importing low-quality drugs and had misused public funds to hold the Suwapathi ceremony, he said.

The Health Minister has been involved in politics since 1994 and he is a dental surgeon who graduated from Peradeniya University.

He is a reputed politician with 25 years’ experience and has held several key positions in previous governments including the post of Fisheries Minister, the letter of demand said.
