Arugam Bay marathon on August 11

All arrangements are afoot by the Arugam Bay Development Forum to conduct their international Half Marathon in a very colourful manner this year with the record number of participants from both local and international competitors vying for the Championship.

This year’s theme for the competition is “Rise up Sri Lanka” and the competition is to be conducted for Men, Women, Elders and Juniors separately on August 11 in Arugam Bay

This event which is to be conducted with the main sponsorship of Arugam Bay Aprota Villas and with the assistance of the Sri Lanka Army’s 242 Brigade stationed in Pottuvil Oorani. The Half Marathon (21.1 km) is open to all who are over 17 years, 10 k.m for women and 5 k.m. for juniors less than 17 years and Elders who are over 60 years. The participants should produce Medical Certificate attesting their physical fitness.

The marathon race will commence at Arugam Bay just in front of the Al-Aqsa Vidyalaya and will proceed through Pasarichchenai, Sawalai Village, Main Road, Oorani and wind up on Arugam bay Bridge.

The winners of Half Marathon for men and women will receive a cash prize of Rs.15, 000.00 each awarded by Paddyway Tours, Arugambay. Those who secure second and third places will also receive Rs.10, 000.00 and Rs. 5,000.00 respectively. In addition these two Marathon winners will also get the facilities of staying one full day with meals with all other comforts. At the same time the participants will also receive Certificates.

Meanwhile a Press briefing organized by the Arugam Bay Development Forum (ADF) regarding the marathon was held at the Auditorium of the Aprota Villas chaired by the Dr. Z.M.Haajith where Pottuvil Predeshya Sabha

Chairman M.S.M.Wasith, Army 242 Brigade Commanding Officer Brigadier Damith Ranasinghe, Director of the Aprota Villas Prasad Liyanaarachi, Secretary of the ADF S.T.Jahufar, Directors of the Tourist Hotels, Senior Members of the ADF too participated.

President Haajith said that more than 100 competitors from Austria, USA, Japan, Netherlands, Australia, South Africa, Jordan and India have already sent in their applications to participate in

this event and the important feature of this event is that some tourists are visiting Sri Lanka solely to take part in this event.
