Four prosecution witnesses summoned

The case filed against the two accused over the killing of eight inmates during the Welikada Prison riots which took place on November 9, 2012, was yesterday fixed for further trial by the Colombo High Court Trial-at-Bar.

The case was taken up before the Colombo High Court Trial-at-Bar bench comprising High Court Judges Gihan Kulatunga (President), Pradeep Hettiarachchi and Manjula Thilakarathna.

The case will be taken up again on October 14 and summons were issued for four prosecution witnesses to appear before the court on the next trial date.

On a previous occasion, Inspector Moses Rangajeewa attached to the Police Narcotics Bureau and Magazine Prison Superintendent Lamahewage Emil Ranjan were ordered to be released on bail by the Trial-at-Bar bench.

Each accused was ordered to be released on a cash bail of Rs.100,000 with two sureties of Rs. 5 million. The first and second suspects were also barred from leaving the country.

The eight prison inmates who were killed in the incident are Kankanmalage Malinda Nilendra Pelpola alias ‘Malan’, Attapattu Sangakkara Nirmala Atapattu, Mohammed Wijaya Rohana alias ‘Gundu’, Chinthamani Mohottige Thushara Chandana alias ‘Kalu Thushara’, Asarappulige Jothipala alias ‘Ponna Kapila’, Harshan Sri Manakeerthi Perera alias ‘Manjusri’, Raigamage Susantha Perera alias ‘Mala Susantha’, and Devamullage Malith Sameera Perera alias ‘Konda Amila’.

Deputy Solicitor General Dilan Ratnayake with Senior State Counsel Madhawa Tennakoon appeared for the Attorney General. President’s Counsel Anuja Premaratne with Nalinda Indatissa appeared for the defence.
