Universities to resume academic programmes

As the Joint Trade Union Collective comprising 27 trade unions in the Sri Lanka university system temporarily called off their strike yesterday, the UGC Chairman has instructed chancellors of all universities to take necessary steps towards starting academic activities in their respective universities.

Trade unions took steps to report back to work following the signing of an agreement between the UGC Chairman and Higher Education Ministry Secretary to implement the recommendations of the Cabinet decision taken on the salary anomaly issue which led to the strike, within a period of one month.

As all university employees decided to report back to work, the UGC Chairman has directed all vice chancellors to commence academic activities in their respective universities.

Functioning of the entire university system was hampered for 35 days owing to the trade union strike.
