Following the spread of dengue once again in Akkaraipattu, a large-scale dengue eradication programme was launched on Saturday organised by the Akkaraipattu social services organization with the support of Akkaraipattu MOH Office, Base Hospital, Municipal Council, DS office, Technical College, federation of Akkaraipattu mosques, Jemmiyathul Ulama, Sunrise Club, Workers’ Union, Royal Youth Club, sports clubs and various social services organisations.

Shramadana volunteers who gathered at the Akkaraipattu Municipal Council’s Hallaj auditorium under the chairmanship of the President of the ESO Eng. M.S.M. Zabri where briefed by the Provincial Director of Health Services Dr. A.L. Alavudeen, MOH Dr. Faroosa Naqfar and Dr. M.I. Mohamed Sitheeque Moulavi.

Volunteers headed by Public Health Inspectors were dispatched to all the divisions in Akkaraipattu along with transport to clear the garbage. Public Health Inspectors went round inspecting every house in the area and advised those who draw water from the opened wells. They also advised them not to have stagnating water and opened vessels in their compounds.

Provincial Director of Health Services Dr. A.L. Alavudeen addressing the gathering of volunteers and religious dignitaries said 3,280 dengue patients have been affected in the Eastern Province and it is regrettable to note that in spite of all advice and warnings to the public, the public’s attitude did not show any remarkable improvements.

This is the main cause for the increase in dengue. It has been identified that 1,399 dengue patients have been identified in the Batticaloa district while the Trincomalee and Kalmunai regions have detected 1,058 and 608 dengue cases.

Ampara RDHS office has been reported 211 dengue patients. So far, altogether six deaths have been reported in the Eastern Province.

Hence, he advised volunteers to take this message to the masses and advise them to take all precautionary measures to combat this disease.
