Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Department officials arrested and prosecuted a foreigner for allegedly catching fish in the sea using a spear gun before Galle Acting Magistrate Lalith Pathirana.

The magistrate, upon consideration of the submissions, bailed out the suspect on a surety of Rs. 500,000 and postponed the delivery of verdict to January 1, 2020.

The suspect is a Ukranian identified as Modal Sefi.

On the information provided by Navy Intelligence officials over the illegal act of fishing using spear guns by a foreigner at sea near Thalpe, Galle, a group of fishery inspectors led by Chief Raid Officer N.N.D.S.U Paranawithana made the arrest following instructions of Department’s Director General Ginige Prasanna Janaka Kumara and Investigations Unit Director Sumana Ediriweera.

The fishery inspectors told the court that the fishing using spear guns is illegal and many countries have prohibited that type of fishing as it is damaging to the underwater corals. So many tourists who come to Sri Lanka are used to engage in sport fishing using spear guns which destroys coral resources.
