‘US is biggest perpetrator of war crimes’

The United States accusing Sri Lanka of war crimes is similar to the pot calling the kettle black as the US is the number one perpetrator of war crimes in the world, Pivithuru Hela Urumaya leader Parliamentarian Udaya Gammanpila said yesterday.

Addressing a press briefing at the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya head office in Pita Kotte, he said that the Darusman Report which does not contain adequate evidence to accuse Sri Lanka of war crimes has resulted in the imposition of a travel ban on Army Commander Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva and the US must give a reply in this regard.

“The US must provide reasons for imposing a travel ban on Army Commander Lt. General Shavendra Silva. The only thing he did was defeat the LTTE which the US said was unbeatable. If the US is trying to penalise the Army Commander for decisively contributing to the eradication of terrorism from our country in 2009, we would like to question the US about the anti-terrorist operations launched by them.”

“The US bears the worst history in war crimes such dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. There is no other country than the US which is so stained with blood. What about their wars in Vietnam and Afghanistan? People living in glass houses should not throw stones,” Gammanpila said.

Deputy national organiser of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya Yasapala Koralage commenting on the UNP said that those who do not contain a sensible heart are making an effort to contest the General Election with the heart symbol. “We have no reason to bother about the name or the symbol with which we are contesting. Where there is the combination of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, people are there.”
