The Government has offered appointments to 42,000 unemployed graduates fulfilling one of the pledges given during the last Presidential election.
The relevant appointment letters have already been sent through courier by the Postal Services Department and would reach the recipients soon, Co-Government Spokesperson and State Minister for Investment Promotion Keheliya Rambukwella said.
The Minister called on the graduates to report to the closest Divisional Secretariat within three days of the receipt of the letter and cautioned that should the recipient take longer than a week, the document will become invalid.
The scheme is open to individuals who have completed their degrees by December 31 of 2019 but who have been unsuccessful in obtaining suitable jobs.
The Minister revealed that nearly 70,000 applications were received during this period. However, only 4,200 could be considered as there had been several shortcomings in the applications of the other graduates.
He added that graduates who would be sent for necessary training would be paid an inclusive sum of Rs. 20 000 during such training periods.
He further said that upon the completion of their probationary period they would be required to serve a minimum of five years in the relevant district before being made permanent employees and eligible for welfare benefits including pensions.
The Minister recalled that when Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa was President, there were 58,000 such appointments made. However, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has been able to fulfill a pledge that he made by offering nearly as many jobs to unemployed graduates across the country.
