Rumi’s travel ban temporarily lifted

Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne temporarily lifted the travel ban imposed on former State Pharmaceuticals Corporation (SPC) Chairman Mohommed Hasheem Mohommed Rumi, yesterday.

Rumi was charged with allegedly giving Rs.2 million to two people who spoke about the alleged ‘white van’ abduction at a press conference prior to the last Presidential Election.

When the matter was taken up before court, Attorney Gunaratne Wanninayake, appearing on behalf of the suspect, requested the temporary lifting of the travel ban imposed on his client, from April 10 to April 25, as he is scheduled to participate in a tea exhibition abroad, and the Chief Magistrate allowed it.

The suspect was ordered to be released on an additional surety of Rs.1 million.

The Chief Magistrate also instructed the suspect to appear before court on April 3.
