Nine arrested for fake news posts

Police said that nine persons have been taken into custody for spreading false rumours on social media on the measures taken to prevent the spreading of COVID-19 virus.

Police furthered that the false rumours spread by these individuals sabotage the preventive measures taken against the pandemic.

The nine individuals include eight males and one female suspect. They have been arrested following the investigations carried out by the Criminal Investigation Department.

The suspects are residents of Bandaragama, Kandy, Dehiwala, Mahagarama, Nugegoda, Galle, Wadduwa, Angoda and Polgahawela.

Police said that all the suspects have been produced before the Colombo magistrate’s court and remanded. CID is carrying out further investigations.
