Wildlife officer killed in raid

A group of poachers had opened fire at a team of wildlife officers who had gone on a raid in the Gal Oya National Park on Wednesday night (22), killing one wildlife officer.

The wildlife officer who was gunned down by the poachers has been identified as a 25-year-old attached to the Inginiyagala Wildlife Office, according to the Police Media division.

The Moneragala Magistrate conducted the Magisterial Inquest and the body of the victim has been taken to hospital for the post-mortem examination.

The police had arrested four suspects involved in the shooting along with a 12-bore shot-gun. The four arrested suspects are scheduled to be produced before the Moneragala Magistrate tomorrow.

The Dambagalla Police is conducting further investigations.
