Harold Ranasinghe, Dharmaraja’s sportsman and sports promoter

Harold Ranasinghe, a product of Dharmaraja College was a good sportsman and promoter.  His pet game was cricket and he was a  top class batsmen-keeper.  He was considered as a great batsman in the team. The role of a wicket-keeper is vital in any form of cricket. No longer is the role restricted to just keep wickets. The glove-man is expected to score quick runs with the bat and play the dual role and Ranasinghe excelled in the dual roles.

Ranasinghe was a well known name in the field of cricket. He also played for the Central Province Schools,  Sri Lanka Schools and Central Province CA. He was a long standing sports officer of the Kandy Municipal Council Playgrounds department and one time head.  He was also a top class coach coaching his own school and Trinity College. In addition he was also a top class umpire.

Ranasinghe was one time secretary of the Kandy District Cricket Association.  He was a fine junior coach and coached many schools amongst them Kingwood, Dharmaraja, Trinity and St.  Sylvester’s.  He also was a top class footballer and played for Sunrise F&AC and Kandy District, and rugby for Kandy Lake Club. Ranasinghe still gives a big hand for junior cricket through his academy, where he teaches the young cricketers how the game should be played. Cricketers still talk about his first-class umpiring.
