Prisoners won’t be presented in courts

The Prisons Department has temporarily suspended presenting prisoners for court proceedings due to the Covid-19 threat.

Commissioner and spokesman Chandana Ekanayake said this is a precautionary measure taken in view of the Covid outbreak reported at the Welikada prison.

However, he said that while court date extensions were being done via video link, prisoners who are required to be produced in court will be produced in court.

Two inmates of the Welikada Prison had previously tested positive for COVID-19. However, Ekanayake said that no new cases have been reported since. However, he said that the decision to limit the prisoners being exposed has been taken to ensure the safety of the prisoners and prevent any infection.
