Persons at quarantine centres to cast votes on July 31

The arrangements will be made for those in quarantine centres to cast their votes on July 31 at their respective centres,  National Elections Commission (NEC) Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya said.

He said the matter of facilitating the vote of those undergoing quarantine was discussed at length at the last NEC meeting.

“There will be more discussions on this, but anyway they would not be coming to the normal polling stations. Therefore, the election staff, public servants on duty and the voters need not to worry. However, the right to vote of those in quarantine centres and those undergoing self-quarantine will be ensured and we are looking at a procedure similar to the postal vote for that purpose,” he added.

The NEC has also decided to allocate two additional days for postal voting for those who were unable to cast their postal votes for the upcoming General Election.

Accordingly, those who were unable to cast their postal votes can vote on 24 and 25 July, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Deshapriya said that there is a little decrease in the number of those who cast postal vote due to the school holidays. The postal voting started on July 13 and concluded on July 21. Deshapriya said the Commission which met on Tuesday decided to facilitate two more days for the postal vote.
