The Galle Police Anti-vice Branch arrested a suspect with 72 packets of Mawa yesterday from a place, where this intoxication powder has been allegedly produced.
Mawa is a mixture of ground tobacco and areca nut which some people consumed with lime and with ground cannabis for more potency.
Police investigations reveal that the suspect had been preparing Mawa at his house in Weliwatta in Galle.
Eighteen kilograms of area nuts, a bottle of treacle and a stock of chemicals were seized. Two national schools lie near the residence, police said.
The suspect was produced before court. He also operates a chicken shop. Police had arrested one of his co-workers with 42 packets of babul betel.
