Prof. Ramees Aboobacker assumes duties as SEUSL Vice Chancellor

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has appointed Prof. Ramees Aboobacker as the Seventh Vice Chancellor of South Eastern University of Sri Lanka (SEUSL) recently.

Prof. Aboobacker assumed duties yesterday (August 9). He has also served as the Dean, Faculty of Arts and Culture, South Eastern University of Sri Lanka before his appointment as Vice Chancellor.

This is the first time in the history of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka that a student and a product of the University has been appointed as the Vice Chancellor.

Prof. Aboobacker who has the first Bachelor of Sociology in the Faculty of Arts and Culture of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka and was elected as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Culture. He was recently promoted to the first Professor of Sociology of the University.

Prof. Rameez Aboobacker who was born in Sainthamaruthu in the Ampara District is the third child of Miskin Bawa Aboobacker and Udumankandu Vathaviyathumma. He received his primary education at Sainthamaruthu Al-Jalal Vidyalaya and his secondary education at Kalmunai Zahira College (National School). He then received his university education at the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka where he assumed duties as the Seventh Vice Chancellor yesterday.

He has participated in various National and International Research Conferences and has authored and published articles in a number of world-class research journals. He was honoured with the South Eastern University’s 2019 Best Analyst Award for his research publications. It is noteworthy that Prof. Aboobacker, a recipient of the Honorary Degree from the South Eastern University by the Senate for publishing research papers in world-class journals, is also the recipient of the award from the 2019 International Conversation Center in Vienna, also known as Kaicit. He has also served as the Director of the University Student Welfare Services, International Relations, and University Teacher Development Centre as well.

Professor Dr. Rameez Aboobacker on assumption of duties as SEUSL Vice Chancellor says, “My first goal is to make the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka as one of the top universities in the world providing knowledge to the demands of the world. He said that he will work with utmost dedication along with all the stakeholders of this University to make it one of the leading universities in our Motherland.

The South Eastern University of Sri Lanka was established by Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) founder leader late M. H. M. Ashraff.
