The National Rugby selectors have picked a women’s pool of 32 players to participate at the forthcoming Asian Rugby Sevens Tournament to be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on November 19 and 20.
At the outset the selectors picked a pool of 40 and it was pruned down to 32. The players have checked in at the Sugathadasa Hotel last Sunday for a residential camp. The lasses will be under the guidance of head coach Saliya Kumara who will be ably assisted by Sujani Ratna.
The poolists will commence their training with all facilities provided by the Ministry of Sports, together with the support of Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR). As per SLR sources, Saliya Kumara has prepared the training schedule and included two trial games,after which the final 20 player squad will be selected for the said tour. These 32 players also underwent an antigen test, where all results were negative.
Meanwhile, the Men’s pool is to be selected soon after the invitational sevens tournament which is to be staged on the 30 and 31 October organized by the Tri Forces and Sri Lanka Police. A final squad of 20 will be picked to represent the sevens tournament which is organized by Asian Rugby for which the invitation has been received by SLR and obliged positively.
“I would like to thank the Sports Minister and the Sri Lanka Rugby giving an opportunity to restart the game in the country after a along lapse taking the game to the village. We completed the fitness test for the incumbent pool which was satisfactory. Now we are embarking on skills testing. said Saliya Kumara.
