Renewable Energy Resources Development Plan to realize clean energy targets

The Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA) coming under the purview of the State Ministry of Solar Power, Wind and Hydro Power Development projects has published the Corporate Plan 2021-2006 which spells out the framework for the implementation of projects in keeping with the global development pertaining to energy transition.

The intervention in the implementation of large scale renewable energy projects as energy parks, Soorya Bala Sangramaya, programmes to promote rooftop solar PV systems, regulation on energy consumption benchmarks, revised code of practice for energy efficient buildings etc. are the activities being implemented in 2021.

Renewable Energy Resources Development State Minister Duminda Dissanayake referring to the awakening renewable energy trend in the country told the Daily News that it was anticipated the National Energy Efficiency Improvement and Conservation Programme to reduce the energy demand, so that our clean energy targets would be realized and the gains realized would be sustained.

“The Renewable Energy Resources Development Plan 2021-2026” compiled by the SLSEA was opened for public comments where a remarkable interest has been observed from the public submitting fruitful comments and opinions. Measures have been taken to incorporate these comments for finalizing large scale renewable energy development projects potential areas were studied through site visits in order to identify the most optimum locations to be taken as probable project sites. The project site identification was carried out in alignment with the national renewable energy development target of 70% electricity power added to the national grid from renewable energy by 2030. Already, proposed Solar Energy Sites have been earmarked in Trincomale, Hambantota, Kilinochchi, Ampara and Puttlam whereas renewable energy sites based on wind found in Musalai, Nanattan, Poonakary, Kalpitiya, Vanathavilluwa and Vengalacheddikulamfor poposed generation capacity around 660 MW, the State Minister explained.

“With regard to the implementation of energy park projects both wind and solar feasibility studies, environmental impact assessment, social impact assessment, processing of obtainable lands etc were executed by SLSEA jointly with the CEB. Siyambanduwa, Pooneryn and Second Phase of Mannar Projects were carried out as energy parks. With the successful commissioning of the first large scale wind power project in the Mannar District which is the best wind power park in Sri Lanka, initiatives have been accelerated to realize the Mannar Phase-02 Wind Power Project”.

State Minister Dissanayake emphasized that based on the environmental impact assessment report on the Siyambalanduwa 100 MW Solar Power Project and the associated transmission line submitted to the Forest Department, environmental approval for the project has been granted and it has been endorsed by the CEA, thus paving the way for the commencement of the Siyambalanduwa Solar Project without further delay.
