Selected hospitals to be brought under Central Govt. control

The Government has decided to bring selected leading hospitals under the control of the Central Government to provide a more effective service, said Minister of Health Keheliya Rambukwella.

This decision had been taken after considering various requests and the number of patients coming to the hospitals daily, infrastructure facilities and health staff.

It was revealed during the discussion that a number of requests have been made since 2014 to take over the Mahiyangana Base Hospital, which covers several districts. Minister Rambukwella said that a request has been made to take over several other hospitals under the Provincial Councils to the Central Government.

"In accordance with the 13th Amendment, there are a number of factors to consider when taking over institutions owned by the Provincial Council to the Central Government," the Minister said.

Minister Rambukwella pointed out that strengthening the country's health system is a very important step in the country's forward march and the present Government has made a major contribution towards this endeavour.

State Minister Thenuka Vidanagamage, Secretary to the Ministry of Health Maj. Gen. Dr. Sanjeewa Munasinghe, Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena, Ministry officials and heads of health institutions in the Uva and Badulla Districts were also present.
