A man who had stolen goods from a supermarket on Ragama Mahabage Road in the Ragama Police Division has killed himself by slitting his throat with a knife after being caught stealing, Ragama Police said.
The man who came to the shop had stolen some perfumes, which were packed on the shelves and had walked out of the shop. But the perfume bottles had fallen on the floor while he was walking out.
The suspect then had run and a driver of a three-wheeler had tried to stop him. But the suspect had escaped after stabbing the driver with a knife. But a group of people who were nearby had chased after him and the suspect after realising that he was about to be caught had cut his neck himself with a knife and fell on the road near a restaurant about 50 metrers from the supermarket.
Police who took immediate action had rushed the suspect to the Ragama Hospital in an ambulance where he had been pronounced dead.
He has been identified as a 44-year-old resident of Ukuwelawatte.
