Three persons were killed after a luxury bus overturned in Nochchimottai area in Vavuniya, Saturday (5) morning, the Police said. Another 21 people were injured in the accident.
The injured have been admitted to Vavuniya Hospital, and the condition of two of them is serious and they have been transferred to the Anuradhapura hospital, according to hospital sources.
It is reported that the driver of the bus is among the dead.
There is also a female student residing in Nawalapitiya who is studying at Siddha Ayurveda Faculty of Jaffna University among the dead. The other deceased have not been identified so far.
At the time of this accident, it was raining and it is believed that the bus driver may have fallen asleep. As the bus collided with the Nochchimottai bridge, the bridge’s girder was completely broken and the bridge was severely damaged. Police said another luxury bus travelling from Jaffna towards Colombo also met with an accident at the same location. It is said that the driver of the second bus who was looking at the accident had driven the bus off the road. However, none of the passengers in that bus was injured.
