Encroached elephant corridors to be revived

The Wildlife Conservation Department has been instructed by Wildlife Conservation Minister Mahinda Amaraweera to take immediate action to propose an acceptable mechanism to revive the traditional major elephant corridors.

These elephant corridors are now entirely or partly used for the implementation of infrastructural development projects, both public and private.

Speaking at a recently held farmers and officers gathering at the Anuradhapura Kachcheri, the Minister said that there are 16 major elephant corridors in the country which are being denied to the wild elephants.

Minister Amaraweera said that wild elephants in the Anuradhapura district too have been deprived of six such corridors, forcing a large number of them to inhabit thickets within close proximity of human settlements and cultivations.
