Pulina takes boys' under 17 title

Pulina Wellalage of St Sebastian College emerged boys under 17 champion at the National Badminton championship played at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium yesterday.

Wellalage the younger brother of National cricket all rounder Dunith Wellalage had a straight two-sets win over his school-mate Thilina Rajakaruna 21/10,21/16 to clinch the title. In the first set Pulina had it easy to get a 1-0 lead but in the second set Thilina took an early lead and at one stage he was leading 16-12 but Pulina Wellalage fought back strongly to win the title.

Pulina Wellalage also played in the men's open singles and defeated 22 year old Chamath Dias in a hard fought three setter game and qualified to play in the quarter final. In the quarter final Pulina was scheduled to play defending champion Buwaneka Gunatilleka yesterday night.

Meanwhile, Hasandu Fernando of St Sebastian's Moratuwa emerged boys under 13 singles champion when he beat top seed Amavan Amarasinghe in two sets 21/6,21/11. Hasandu defeated Chanthula Amunugama in the semi finals while Amavan beat Duvindu Edirisinghe in the other semi final to enter the final.

The men's and women's open semi finals and doubles and mixed doubles semi finals will be played today at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.

The finals will be held tomorrow and Sports Minster Roshan Ranasinghe will be the Chief Guest.
