Postal voting postponed, EC confirms decision

The Election Commission yesterday said that the Postal voting for the LG Polls which was scheduled to be held next week, has been postponed indefinitely.

In a statement, the Election Commission said it had held a lengthy discussion with the Secretaries of political parties contesting the LG Polls yesterday. Some political parties had informed the Election Commission that conducting the Local Government Polls on April 25, in the present context was not feasible and it should be postponed to a later date. Some had said that a date for the poll should be announced only after completing the necessary background and logistics.

Some political parties had suggested the polls should not be postponed further.

Some parties had proposed that a new date should be announced  with the agreement of all stakeholders including the Legislature and the Executive.

The Election Commission further said it had decided not to hold postal voting for the Local Government Elections on the scheduled date and after considering all factors the commission will consider a new date for the elections in the future.
