Two accused of stealing from ex-Minister’s residence released

Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis yesterday ordered the release of the

two accused from a case filed against them in connection with allegedly stealing Rs.6 million from the official residence of former Minister Rauff Hakeem.

The Magistrate observed that the prosecution has not submitted sufficient evidence to prove the charges filed against the suspects.The case had been filed by the Cinnamon Garden Police following a complaint lodged by the the former Minister’s wife in 2019.

The complainant had stated in her complaint that her husband had sold a vehicle and obtained the aforesaid Rs.6 million and the said money was hidden under the bed in their bedroom.

The complainant had also mentioned that few notes worth Rs.5000 were found inside a drainage pit of that house.

The Magistrate further observed that the prosecution has not produced said money as case productions as well.
