Former Matale Thomian Cricket Captain killed in accident

A former cricket captain of St. Thomas' College, Matale Dushmantha Sithul Wijesekera was killed in a fatal car accident at Palapathwala, Matale on Saturday when he was returning from a batch party.

Dushmantha Sithul Wijesekera was also part of several Sri Lanka school cricket provincial squads.

Wijesekera who had sat for the GCE advanced level exam this year was returning home after the batch party on Friday night in a car driven by a classmate of his. The car struck a tree and he was killed on the spot. The classmate who had driven the car was admitted to the ICU of the Kandy General Hospital.

Dushmantha, who was also a senior prefect of St. Thomas’ in the year 2021/2022, is one of the best cricketers from that school in recent times. He excelled in cricket from his young days and joined the provincial under-19 squad.

Having started his career at Vijaya College, Dushmantha's cricket career blossomed when he joined St. Thomas’ College. Dushmantha, who became the captain of the school three years after joining the school’s under-13 cricket team, recorded the best performance by an under-13 bowler that year by taking 13 wickets for 22 runs in a match against Madawala Central in Kandy in 2017.

In the same year, he was also appointed as the captain of the Matale district under-13 cricket team, and in the first round of the under-15 first division cricket tournament in 2019, he took 22 wickets in four matches.

Sithul’s remains are lying at his residence in Thotagamuwa Estate, Matale, and the funeral will take place today.
