Batticaloa Sinhala Maha Vidyalaya opens after 33 years

The Sinhala Maha Vidyalaya trilingual school at Batticaloa town was re-opened by the Eastern Province Governor Anuradha Yahampath on Thursday (27), after a lapse of 33 years.

This school was closed due to the conflict in 1990. It has now been opened for admissions.

The opening ceremony was presided over by the Batticaloa Zone Education Director Sujatha Kulendrakumar. After unveiling the plague and cutting the ribbon the Governor admitted the first batch of children to the school. An old student girl of this school reminisced that this school established in 1954 catered to 2,700 children with 72 teachers then. The Governor expressed her great joy in being able to establish this school in the Batticaloa district to cater to those who’s mother tongue was Sinhala. “A section of the population had left the district during the conflict and they are coming back with the co-operation of the education authorities. I am glad that they can give their children and education in their mother tongue,” the Governor said.

Secretary to the Education Eastern Province H. E. M. W. G. Dissanayake, Secretary to the Governor L. P. Mathanayake, Eastern Provincial Director of Education Ahila Kanagasooriyam, Batticaloa Regional Manager of the People’s Bank E. P. A. Sisira Kumara were present on the occasion.
