Kuwaiti national gets permission to take air rifle

A Kuwait national who had arrived at the Katunayake airport on May 31 night to leave for Kuwait with an air rifle he had purchased in Sri Lanka without obtaining permission from the Sri Lanka Civil Aviation Authority had been taken into custody by officers of the security division of the airport and handed over to airport police for further investigation.

This 75-year-old Kuwaiti national named Saleem Mohammed is an owner of shops in that country.

He had arrived at the airport at 6.15pm on May 31 to leave for Kuwait on SriLankan Airlines flight UL 229.

The air rifle had been inside his luggage and it had been revealed by the scanner machine at the second security post of the departure terminal of the Katunayake airport. The Kuwaiti national had come to Sri Lanka to obtain treatment for his knees.

It was revealed that the air rifle is not a firearm and that he had a licence to use it within Sri Lanka from the Defence Ministry. However, he had been arrested since he did not have a permit from the Sri Lanka Civil Aviation Authority to take this air rifle via air.
