Gamini Seneviratne - a versatile sportsman

H.M. Gamini Seneviratne, the former Government Agent and District Secretary of Kandy District is a versatile personalty with both administrative and sporting talent.

He was appointed as the Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently while working as the Secretary of the Public Service Commission. Gamini had his early education at a rural school called Kiulpane MMV, Kegalle and then shifted to Kingswood College, Kandy in 1974. He once again changed the school when he joined St.Sylvesters’ Kandy from 1975 to 1981 and finally entered the University of Peradeniya in 1982. Gamini always maintained a well balanced lifestyle mixed with sports and work and reached the top in both spheres. He was an athlete, karate black belt holder, tennis player and also a chess player of repute. Although he was at the Peradeniya Campus, he had to spend 2 years at the Dumbara Campus as the Arts Faculty was functioning there at that time.

He was the president of the Sports Council of the Dumbara Campus and continued with his sporting career there. Gamini joined the Sri Lanka Administrative Service in 1988 with his first appointment as an Asst.Govt. Agent for Galigamuwa in the Kegalle district and served there until 1992. He served as the Provincial Secretary at Rambukkana Secretariat from 1992 to 1994. From 1994 to 1995 he served as the Director of Industries in Sabaragamuwa Province and then served as the provincial secretary of Laggala (1995 to 1997) and Kundasale (1997 to 1999). He had a string of appointments as Provincial Secretary from 1999 to 2005 and from 2005 to 2006 served as the Secretary to the Governor of Central Province.

He was appointed as the District Secretary and Govt. Agent of Matale District from 2006 to 2010. Finally Gamini Seneviratne came to Kandy as a Govt.Agent and District Secretary and a few years back he got an appointment as the secretary of the Public Service Commission until he got this new appointment.
