Kerawalapitiya tender should have been awarded to Lakdhanavi - LTLSU

Lanka Transformers Limited Staff Union (LTLSU) yesterday charged that the country will lose more than Rs.90,000 million in 20 years due to the awarding of Kerawalapitiya 300 MW LNG Power Plant project to a Chinese Company.

Addressing the media at the Grand Oriental Hotel in Colombo yesterday, LTLSU President Sameera Ganegoda said that if the Tender was carried out according to the proper procedure, the Tender should have been awarded to Lakdhanavi and it is evident that the Tender procedure has been violated from the inception.

The LTLSU President said that Lakdhanavi’s Unit Price was Rs.14.98 against the Chinese company, GCL’s unit price of Rs.15.97. During the bidding time, the dollar stood at Rs.150 while the rate has now risen to Rs.180, and the price difference subsequently rose to Rs.1.21.

“This amounts to a loss of Rs.52,000 million for the operating life of 20 years. The dollar will continue to rise and the average estimated rise in the dollar will be Rs.323 over the next 20 years. Then the total loss incurred is estimated to be over Rs.90,000 million.

The LTLSU President said that Lakdhanavi is the largest local power generation company in Sri Lanka which was established in 1996 as the country’s first independent power producer. Since then, Lakdhanavi was renowned for low cost power generation and speedy plant construction.
