President Maithripala Sirisena said even though traditionally in our country, children are disciplined at schools, at present, the interference of the concept of human rights in teaching has made it a challenge to build a better future generation.
The President said although various ideas were emerging in society regarding teachers punishing children due to an occasional fault, the teachers’ responsibility in creating a disciplined and better society is boundless.
The President was participating in the 100th Anniversary celebrations of the Kokawala Central College in Matara, on Monday.
President Sirisena said the child should get proper guidance and love from his/her home as well as from school. If it does not happen, children would get addicted to social menaces such as drugs and engage in criminal activities.
During the event, President Sirisena vested with the students, the Primary Learning Resource Centre built at the school, under the ‘Nearest School is the Best School National Programme’.
The President also made an observation tour of the Learning Resource Centre.
He paid floral tributes to the photographs of his former school teachers, Sirisena Wijesiriwardena and Kusuma Wijesiriwardana.
The President also laid the foundation stone for the proposed fully-equipped Sports Pavilion at the school.
He made a donation to the construction work as well.

Aparekka Himarathana Thera, Governor Ranjith Keerthi Tennakoon, Educational Minister of South Province Chandima Rasaputhra, Minister of Southern Province Manoj Sirisena, Dr. Bandula Wijesiriwardhana, Principle R. M. R. Bandara, teachers, parents, and past pupils were also present.
