‘Nation must unite in the face of tragedy’

Pingalpoththa Raja Maha Viharaya Chief Incumbent Ven. Dunukedeniye Kusaladhamma Thera said that Sri Lanka is one of the rarest countries in the world that is blessed with multi-cultural and multi-religious communities.

The thera expressed these views delivering an anusasana on ‘Religious Co-existence Among Sri Lankans’ held at the temple premises. The thera further said that this diversity in culture, faith, and tradition beautifies the nation’s cultural heritage.

He added that moreover, it enhances its regional and international relations with many countries in the world. Kusaladhamma Thera said this diversity gives Sri Lankans more advantages culturally, politically, as well as economically.

“Having four different religions in our island is like having four types of flowers in a bouquet. Each flower gives different fragrances, yet when all are combined, it creates an even greater aromatic setting,” he said.

The thera said that we should gauge our cultural diversity from a positive perspective: Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, Malay, and Burgher; all these communities clearly interact with one another in many ways, at workplaces, industries, paddy fields, business places, offices, and so on. This is the reality of the day-to-day life of our communities,” the chief incumbent said.

“Certain elements, as well as extremists, are trying to sabotage this co-existence and hence, we must all be vigilant of their inhuman activities at all time,” the thera added.
