Former Deraniyagala PS Chairman gets 24 years RI

Former Deraniyagala Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Anil Champika Wijesinghe was sentenced to a 24 year Rigorous Imprisonment by Colombo High Court Judge Gihan Kulatunge yesterday.

He was accused of soliciting a bribe of Rs. 500,000 from a female in the Deraniyagala area to issue the street line certificate for her land plot in 2001.The former Chairman had obtained Rs. 400,000 of that through a Technical Officer of the Deraniyagala PS. The case had been filed by the Bribery Commission.

Declaring the verdict, the HC Judge stated the charges against the accused have been proved beyond reasonable doubt. In addition to the Rigorous Imprisonment, he was also fined Rs.20,000 and ordered to pay a compensation of Rs 250,000 to the said woman.
