Around 300 Lankan refugees seek Indian citizenship

Around 300 families of Sri Lankan refugees, staying in a camp on the outskirts of Coimbatore, in Tamil Nadu, yesterday petitioned the Tamil Nadu government seeking Indian citizenship.

A group of representatives of the refugees, including a few women, submitted a petition to District Collector K. Rajamani, Times of India reported.

Later, talking to reporters, the Lankan nationals said they had been staying in the refugee camp in Pooluvapatti for 29 years.

They were unable to go back to Sri Lanka and hence wanted Indian citizenship, they said.
