Police sergeant arrested while transporting heroin

A Police sergeant who was the driver of a high ranking officer in a Special Division of the Police Headquarters has been arrested in connection with a heroin racket, Bandaragama Police said.

“This suspected driver has been arrested by the Police at the Southern Expressway Interchange when they stopped and searched a car which was plying from Galle to Panadura. The suspect was initially arrested on a charge of driving without a curfew license,” Police said.

“He was a resident of the Panadura area and had rented the car from a cab service in Bandaragama after producing his ID card,” Police revealed.

Further investigations revealed that the suspect was involved in heroin trafficking and the Police also arrested another three suspects who had connections with this heroin racket. Police said that a large scale heroin trafficker named “Karawalaya” also among these three suspects and he had transported heroin from Panadura to Galle, Midigama, Weligama, Kalutara and Wadduwa areas with the assistance the police driver.

“The suspect driver was involved in this drug trafficking by using his uniform and ID for a long time and also transporting drugs on a large scale with other suspects,” Police said. Investigations are continuing.
