Distance learning programmes via electronic media for all grades

The Education Ministry together with key stakeholders in education and the media will commence distance learning programmes for all grades via the electronic media from November 15, 2020 as the schools are yet to open due to the COVID-19 pandemic prevailing in the country.

The Secretary of the State Ministry of Education Reforms, Promotion of Open Universities and Distance Learning Dr. Upali M. Sedara issuing a special statement yesterday (09) announced that the education of school children should be continued using alternative methods during the COVID-19 epidemic.

The State Ministry Secretary Dr. Sedara further noted that, “Thus educational programmes are being prepared by the Ministry of Education, the State Ministry of Education Reforms, Promotion of Open Universities and Distance Learning in collaboration with the National Institute of Education, the leading schools in the Western Province, the leading schools in Jaffna, Provincial Departments of Education and Electronic Telecommunication strategists.”

Cabinet approval has already been obtained for this decision and discussions have already been held with representatives of state and private channels regarding broadcasting activities, it was also stated. Accordingly educational programs are scheduled to commence from November 15 in Sinhala, Tamil and English mediums, during the day time, concentrating on the main subjects of Grades 3, 4 and 5, the main subjects of Grades 6 to 11 and the main subjects of all streams in the Advanced Level classes.

“These educational programs are compiled and produced by experienced teachers in government leading schools and are supervised by subject directors. Programmes have been prepared according to the syllabus for the subjects of the relevant grades for the 3rd term of the academic year 2020.” the statement also said.

The students will be informed about the channels subjects and schedules of the broadcasts in due time.
