44 protesters granted personal bail

Police yesterday said that 44 persons including teachers who were arrested after protesting opposite the Presidential Secretariat on Wednesday (04) have tested negative for COVID-19.

They were released on a personal bail of Rs.100,000 each after being produced before Colombo Fort Magistrate’s court.

Police Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana stated that the suspects had been subjected to Rapid Antigen Tests by the Colombo Municipal Council following their arrest, and they had all tested negative.

Senior DIG Ajith Rohana further said statements have been recorded from the arrested individuals.

“Twenty two male teachers, 16 female teachers and six other individuals were among the group arrested on Wednesday”, He added.

The Police Spokesperson said that they will be charged with Wrongful Restraint, Unlawful Assembly, and the Violation of Quarantine Rules & Regulations and offenses under the Thoroughfares Act of Sri Lanka. The Court also ordered the release of the vehicles which were seized by the Police.
