Sri Lanka will field a spin-heavy attack for the first Day/Night One Day International (ODI) against South Africa, at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, today.

“I think we have a formidable spin attack with plenty of options and the conditions and the slowness of the wicket will also be of good advantage for us,” Sri Lanka Skipper Dasun Shanaka said yesterday. Shanaka also said that Sri Lanka will start with six batsmen, two all-rounders and three spinners as they look to snatch an early lead in the three-match series.

“We will play to our strength and I have a lot of confidence in our spinners with at least three of them set to make the line-up in addition to two all-rounders.”

“We have some promising talent with us with players like Mahesh Theekshana, Ramesh Mendis and Praveen Jayawickrama in contention to join the two main spinners Wanindu Hasaranga and Akila Dananjaya.”

“The South Africa Team may have two of the world’s fastest bowlers with them but I am pretty sure they will not be able to exploit our conditions, which will be tailor-made for our spinners,” he stressed.

“We have already planned out our strategy on how to face their fast bowlers and if our batsmen could survive the first 10 overs then we have a very good chance of putting up a match winning total,” Shanaka added.
