Foreign Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris asked international organizations as to how fair it is to give priority to the internal issues of Sri Lanka without paying due attention to the pandemic situation suffered by the entire world.
Minister Prof. Peiris was speaking to the media at the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) headquarters in Battaramulla yesterday.
The Foreign Minister claimed that the process of collecting evidence against Sri Lanka by international organizations including the UNHRC is not transparent and is grossly unfair. He said although it has become a timely need for every international organization to get together to support administering at least one vaccine dose to every citizen worldwide, some of the organizations are attempting to achieve their ulterior motives and engage in a witch hunt against selected countries amidst the pandemic.
He also stressed that finding solutions to internal issues and Human Rights violation claims will only be done following a local mechanism and no decision would be taken as per the will or instructions of any international organization.
He had forcefully expressed this view at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and in his engagements with leading international figures during his recent visit to the US for UN General Assembly sessions with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
SLPP General Secretary MP Sagara Kariyawasam on this occasion said that by signing an investment agreement on the Yugadhanawi Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant in Kerawalapitiya, the US will have no provisions to make any impact on Sri Lanka.
He said by making the general public apprehensive of the agreement with the US Company New Fortress Energy (NFE), Opposition elements are striving to disrupt the national development drive which is now in high gear.
Some individuals and parties with vested interests are attempting to obtain political gains at this time through such fear mongering, he added.
