Senior students addicted to liquor, harmful drugs and other narcotics - Senior Education Director

Many senior students of government schools in both Kurunegala and Puttalam Districts of the NWP have been found to have got addicted to liquor, harmful drugs and other narcotics by now, said Kurunegala District Senior Education Director W.M.Balasooriya yesterday.

He made this observation, while speaking at a meeting of school heads of the North Western Province held today in Bingiriya, Kurunegala.

About 1,689 students of leading government and private schools of the North Western Province (NWP) have been arrested as suspects of narcotics- related offences during the past two years. About 560 students are now undergoing a rehabilitation process by the Government over drug addiction. Consequently, about 1,500 education programmes and students’ counselling sessions for senior students of the country on drug addiction and crime prevention are to be held by Education Ministry in collaboration with the Health Ministry next month.
