No need to panic over Monkeypox

Sri Lankan Health authorities yesterday urged the public not to panic over the virus Monkeypox.

Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Samitha Ginige said that with the unusual spread of the virus in European countries, the World Health Organization (WHO) has been alerted and no cases have been reported in the Asian region.

He said that the traditional Monkeypox virus was spreading in some parts of the world and there was no danger of the disease becoming an epidemic in the country.

Dr Ginige further said that the spread of the virus abroad was limited and Health authorities are on alert to detect any case of monkeypox within the country.

He said the virus causes blisters on the skin and no person with these symptoms could travel from one country to another.
