Clarifications needed on 22nd Amendment - Opposition Leader

A final decision was not arrived at during the discussion with the Prime Minister regarding limiting the Presidential powers by the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said.

Limiting the powers of the executive presidency is a major element in the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, Premadasa pointed out. Premadasa also noted that the excessive powers that centered around one person is the main reason why the country is in a major economic crisis.

Premadasa made these observations in parliament yesterday (6) explaining the outcome of the recent discussion with the Premier on giving the Opposition’s support to the 22nd Amendment.

“It was a brief discussion. We questioned if the 22nd Amendment fulfills the main objective of it, which is, limiting the Executive Presidency and forming a better democratic formation of checks and balances. This is the will of the public. We also asked about things we cannot agree with in these amendments. We also need a clarification whether there are certain changes to the amendments,” Premadasa pointed out.
