Police SC record stunning win over Airmen

Police SC created a major upset when they defeated the favourites Air Force SC 21-15 in their SLR Inter-Club League Rugby Tournament first-round match played at Ratmalana yesterday.

After three successive defeats, Police SC finally got their act together well and went on to collect their points from three goals while the Airman responded with one goal, one try and one penalty.

But it was Air Force SC who opened the scoring when fly half Nuwan Perera booted a 25-metre penalty shortly after the kick-off. Police SC scored their first try in the 12th- minute when skipper Nisal Samadhi went over the whitewash following a five-metre scrum giving Yohan Peiris an easy conversion.

Air Force SC took the lead once again when prop forward Niroshan Rajanayake scored their first try in the 17th minute with Perera adding the extra points to make it 10-7. However, Police SC scored their second try in the 36th-minute with Hashan Fernando adding the finishing touches to a superb three quarter move. Peiris made sure with the conversion and the visitors went into half time with a 14-10 lead.

Police SC virtually sealed the contest in their favour when prop forward Mohamed Faumy scored a push over try shortly after the resumption and Peiris added the extra points to make it 21-10. Air Force SC made a late comeback with hooker Parakrama Ratnayake scoring their second try to reduce the deficit but Police SC held on determinedly to register their first win of the tournament.
